Guided by Aaron Rodgers the defending champions beat Atlanta 25-14 on the road, and increase their winning streak to five games this season.
The Atlanta Falcons wanted to hand out the defending champions Green Bay Packers their first loss of the season on Sunday night at the Georgia Dome, and things started pretty good for them. Early in the second quarter the hosts where already up by 14 points through Roddy White and Michael Turner, and held the Packers to no touchdowns until the end of the first half. But that didn’t keep Green Bay from reducing the deficit to 8 points before the break, thanks to two field goals from Mason Crosby.
Back from the break things were going in the same direction for the Packers, still unable to score a TD and shortening distances only through Crosby, who scored his third field goal of the night late in the third quarter to put things 14-9.
The place kicker was doing a great job in keeping his team close in the score, but the Packers were going to need more than just him to win the game: they needed their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers to start rolling. The Super Bowl MVP didn’t hide from his responsibility and began to pick up his game.
Rodgers began to take shots and move around, which was going to give good results at 3:53 in the third quarter with a 70 yard deep pass to James Jones, who scored the first TD of the night for Green Bay. The defending champions had picked up the 14-defecit and where now ahead by one. Rodgers wanted to keep the momentum and instead of taking the extra point he went for the two-point conversion, but his pass to Jermichael Finley was incomplete.
On the first play of the fourth quarter Rodgers made up for his mistake and threw a 29 yard TD pass to Greg Jennings. The Falcons where now down by eight, but unlike the Packers their quarterback, Matt Ryan, wasn’t able to pick up the pace, and instead suffered two interceptions: the first one at 11:12 by Charlie Preprah, and the other one with 1:10 to go by Jarret Bush. In between those two plays Crosby scored his fourth field goal of the game, which Green Bay won 25-14.
Against the Falcons Rodgers threw his 100th career TD pass, caught by Jones, and became to QB with less interceptions suffered to reach that mark with just 34, which broke the record that was in Philip Rivers’ possession. He later on threw his 101th TD pass and 14th of the season, in a game where “the rythim wasn’t there at all the time, but we just stayed with it,” he said.
It was the fifth victory of the 2011 regular NFL season for the defending Super Bowl champions in the same number of weeks, something that didn’t happen in the league since the 2007 Colts. On Sunday they will be receiving the 0-4 St. Louis Rams, squad that will be returning from Bye Week, in search of their sixth consecutive victory.
As far as the 2-3 Falcons their next game is also on Sunday at home, against the 1-4 Carolina Panthers.

Georgetown convincingly defeated Marquette 80-57 in the Big East Championship Semifinal. It was the first time since the Bracket began that Marquette was unable to overcome its rival. The team was smashed by the Hoyas, whose offensive was led by Greg Monroe. Marquette had had an incredible winning steak, taking 9 of its last 11 games of the regular season, including 3 games in overtime. It went on to beat St. John and Villanova before running out of gas in front of Georgetown. Georgetown entered the Big East tournament at No. 22. Hardly the favorites, the Hoyas had defeated to Syracuse to enter the semifinals against Marquette. The players had exhibited a great deal of confidence, proving that the team had more possibility and talent than any had anticipated. Monroe ended the game with 23 points and 13 rebounds, sending the Hoyas to the tournament final for the third consecutive year. Chris Wright followed Monroe with 15 points; Wright had given an astounding performance against Syracuse, scoring 27 points in that game. Monroe is following in the footsteps of some great players from Georgetown, including Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, and Alponzo Mourning.
He stated that he was honored to play with such a team. aEoeI’m honored to follow people that were so good here,aE Monroe said. aEoeThe things they accomplished and did and went on to do great things at a high level aE” me just being here two years, I can’t put myself in the same category as those players.aE Chris Wright also expressed his admiration for Monroe and stated that all the players recognized that Monroe’s skill and his import in the game against West Virginia in the BET final. Marquette coach Buzz Williams was, unsurprisingly, disappointed with his team’s defeat, although he stated that he thought the team did a good job and fought to the end. Their mistakes, however, cost the players the game and a spot in the Big East Final. With that victory, Georgetown headed to the Big East final against West Virginia. The game was full of intensity and incredible performances. In the end, though, it was West Virginia, with a score of 60-58, which defeated a Georgetown that went down fighting.
Chris Wright ended up with 20 points and Greg Monroe led the break, while Austin Freeman made several important saves. Their performances, however, were not enough. Even though the game was very even between the two teams, West Virginia was better with the boards. The team also boasted Da’Sean Butler, who scored 20 points for the Mountaineers and who was designated the MVP player of the tournament for his great plays and shots. In fact, Da’Sean Buttler was the one who gave the victory to West Virginia as he scored the last 2 points with only 4 seconds in the clock. This is the second time that the West Virginia team has gone into the finals for the Big East Tournament; the last time was in 2005, when it was defeated by Syracuse 68-59.
Chelsea saw their dream of being in the Champions League final gone away when the Barcelona scored for the draw in the very last moment of the match. The idea of having the same final of last year aE” Chelsea vs. Manchester United aE” was no longer available since Barcelona just needed a draw to classify to the final. For a moment, Chelsea and their fans had that revenge feeling, thinking they could overcome last year’s defeat to United, but it was blown away just at the end of the match.
Bara did a really good job despite they were not having two of their starting centre-backs, among them Thierry Henry who was injured, but everything was set up perfectly by Coach Pepe Guardiola. The Catalan team played a very good and neat game in the first 20 minutes but after that it became little bit harder for them to keep the pace since Chelsea started giving problems to them offensively.
The goal for Chelsea came at minute 9th by Michael Essien, who had been out of the season for six months due to a knee injury, and gave the fans hope to be on the final again and take revenge of what happened last year when Chelsea was defeated by Manchester United on penalty kicks at Moscow in the final for last year’s UEFA Champions League.
The goal came as a big disappointment for Bara, who was playing really well, and after that they were just desperate to find a goal option that was not coming. They had to fight really hard since later on Chelsea had some good opportunities to score; however, but the Spanish team committed a lot of fouls as well and finally Dani Alves was punished with a yellow card that will leave him out for the next game, the final against Manchester. The referee was Tom Henning Ovrebo, who apparently did not call at least four penalty fouls that Bara committed against the English team that, of course, could have given the victory for the Chelsea team. The goal for Barcelona finally came at minute 93, with Chelsea fighting for every ball that was entering into the dangerous zone, trying to cover every space; but then, they allowed Iniesta too much room and he took advantage of it and scored the goal with a pass from Messi. Then the drama began for Chelsea players and the fans again when they got very upset after a ball that Michael Ballack kicked touched a defender’s arm, but for Ovrebo it just didn’t happen and didn’t call the penalty kick.
Ballack got a yellow card for protesting and a few seconds later the game was over and all the hopes for the Chelsea team were gone in a minute. For the Barcelona players the score was a result of real hard work. After the game, Iniesta said that aEoeWe did a spectacular job playing with a man less and especially after being kicked a lot and going through a tough fight,aE he admitted. aEoeWe deserve this because of our work and because of the season we are having. When you put in the effort, as we did in London, the rewards are obtained. This goes for all Barcelonismo.aE The final will be held at Rome on May 27th.
Inter Milan is enjoying an incredible winning streak recently, extending its advantage over second place AS Roma to 8 points and now third place AC Milan to 10. The victory also ended Cagliary’s six-game winning streak and gave proof of Inter’s dominance. Inter has won all of its league games this season and its last eight games at home. The team is rapidly becoming one of the best in Europe, with a solid system and a great group of players led by Samuel Eto’o and Maicon, among others. The game was clearly led by Inter from the beginning. Cagliary had a few opportunities, but Inter showed its superiority throughout the match. The first goal came at the beginning of the game, in minute 6, when Pandev received an open pass from Javier Zanetti to score from close range. Cagliary responded quickly to the first goal. The team saw a great opportunity with Daniel Conti and his 25-yard shot that forced Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar to pay attention. Nonetheless, Cagliary was unable to even the score. The team, moreover, suffered from defensive problems, a weakness that Inter quickly took advantage of. The leaders in the Italian League had clear opportunities aE” as in minute 14 aE” but it wasn’t until minute 20 that Inter was able to complete a play and score the second goal of the game.
A corner shot from Maicon was headed by Walter Samuel into Cagliary’s net. The second goal was a surprise for Cagliary, whose energy seemed to run out after a false goal in minute 33. The shot was deemed offside by the referee, although there were doubts about who touched the ball last. Inter seemed likely to score again before halftime with a free kick from Esteban Cambiasso, shooting the ball straight into Cagliary’s arc, but goalkeeper Agazi saved it. However, Inter recovered after the second half to make up for the missed opportunity. Just two minutes in, Eto’o gave the ball to Pandev, who sent a wide pass to Milito, who took the ball and scored from close range. Nor was this Inter’s last attempt, despite the crushing 3-0 score. The team searched for more opportunities but was unable to complete. Cagliary also looked for points, but was unable to score. The players were close at the end, but Inter’s defense, including goalkeeper Cesar, put up a strong block.
Calgiary was left with no further options, and the game fell to Inter with a convincing 3-0 victory. aEoeThis win against Cagliari is very important because it puts us 10 points above second place,aE Inter coach Jose Mourinho said. aEoeToday we started the match trusting in our offensive mentality. Cagliari isn’t an easy team to play against and even when 2-0 up its players didn’t collapse and tried to make chances, but we were solid and compact.aE Mourihno and his team are looking forward to their next Scudetto, with an 8-point difference from the second place and 10-point difference from their all-time rival AC Milan, which was unable to win its game against Bologna. The game ended up in a draw and Milan dropped to third. AC Roma defeated Fiorentina 1-0.
In a game that seemed likely to go to Costa Rica, the United States managed to tie in the last seconds, 2-2. The game was the last qualifier for the US, which has been guaranteed a spot in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa; Costa Rica, on the other hand, needed to win for a secure spot next year. The Americans struggled in the first half of the game, falling behind Costa Rica, which took advantage of the vacuum to score two goals: Bryan Ruiz shot the ball into Tim Howard’s net twice, in the 21st and 24th minutes. Entering the second half, it appeared that Costa Rica would beat the
United States in its second home loss in a qualifying round since the Ticos bested the US in 1985. The Ticos had the victory at their fingertips for much of the game. But it wasn’t to be. A difficult second half left the Ticos floundering, struggling to regain their first half performance. The Americans, headed by Michael Bradley, had a resurgence; they finally put in a rebound in the 72nd minute. And then, with just 20 seconds left on the clock, Bornstein headed in a corner kick from second half substitute Robbie Rogers from about 7 yards to destroy Costa Rica’s hopes of a secure qualification.
The draw felt more like a victory for the Americans, who celebrated after the goal. Much of their motivation was inspired from Charlie Davis, an American teammate who suffered a serious car accident. Davies was supposed to be on the starting lineup for the game against Costa Rica. However, early Tuesday, Davies was involved in one-vehicle accident that left him with two broken bones in his right leg, one broken bone in his left elbow, along with a lacerated bladder and facial fractures. He will be hospitalized for a week and is expected to take 6 to 12 months to recovery” a time frame that will leave him out of the World Cup. aEoeWe used Charlie’s situation to motivate us, goalkeeper Howard said. aEoeWe’re happy he was alive, and that in itself gave us a lift. Charlie would give anything at this moment to put on a jersey and have it all back. You almost kind of feel lucky and privileged, and that was kind of motivation to us. The US managed the draw even with one man down.
Defender Oguchi Onyewu slipped and fell on the slick turf and was diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon, and injury that usually requires a recovery time of three to four months. And, because the US had already used its three substitutes, Onyewu could not be replaced. In other news, Honduras won 1-0 against El Salvador and qualified for the World Cup directly for the first time since 1982, finishing ahead of Costa Rica on goal difference, plus-2 to even. Costa Rica will need to prepare for the playoffs against Uruguay beginning next month. The first game will be in Costa Rica on November 14th; the second will be in Uruguay four days later.
If a baseball hitter is a real good fast ball hitter who has very quick bat speed, he should not change his hitting style and should get up there and take his normal swing.
On the other hand, not all hitters have that quickness in their swing and they should make adjustments to increase their chance for a successful at bat. Against some flame throwers, many very good hitters cut down on their stride or even omit it completely, especially with two strikes on them. There is nothing wrong with conceding a little bit to a pitcher. The only goal is a successful at bat and it’s not important how you achieve that success.
For those hitters who have trouble against “flame throwers,” they should remember that it’s not necessary to take any stride at all or to swing the bat hard. Some hitters, especially younger hitters, do not get this message. They quite often over swing and take this long, looping swing that is very late on the pitch and have very little if any chance at all. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens over and over again and is quite frustrating for a hitter of any age, whether it is a younger player or an older player. Younger players will not have fun on the baseball field if this continues to happen. If a young player continues to strike out three times a game, in no time at all he will lose interest in playing baseball.
The name of this game, from a baseball hitter’s point of view is to get the “sweet” spot of the bat on the ball. If you swing the bat so easy that it won’t crush a grape, but can somehow manage to get the sweet part of the bat on the ball, you will get your share of hits. If you do the same thing against a power pitcher, you will get more than your share of hits. It’s not important how weak a swing you had at the pitch and the weakness of your swing will go totally unnoticed. What will be very well noticed is how you hit the ball extremely hard against a flame thrower who has been striking out a lot of batters.
Leading bat manufacturers spend millions of dollars on research to have batted balls jump off the sweet part of the bats they manufacture. The hitter’s chore is to just get that sweet spot of the bat on the pitched baseball. Hitters should let the speed of the pitch do 90% of the work for them. Against the flame throwers, the hitter who has trouble with the heater should keep it as simple as possible. Start the swing early and no need to stride at all. Throw the barrel of the bat down at the pitch. One of the better baseball tips on hitting to remember is that even if your swing is so easy that it could not crush a grape, the sweet spot of the bat and the velocity of the fast pitch will do 90% of the work for you!
The team that looked very confident and pleased after a victory in the Estadio Azteca last Saturday against Costa Rica, was not the same team that played yesterday in the Olympic Stadium against Honduras, who lost 3-1 in a very humiliating way, showing that Mexico is a very weak team and that something is missing; they have the players and the capacity but they are not getting to a level of good effectiveness that can make them win games away from home. With the face that Mexico showed back on Saturday they became favorites to win over Honduras, especially after those actually had a hard time in Port of Spain against Trinidad & Tobago over the weekend, finishing with a draw 1-1 at the end.
The big question here is what is going bad in the Mexican squad? Most of the people are saying that the coach Sven Goran-Eriksson is not good enough to handle a team like Mexico. While the team hasn’t been able to win outside home, the Mexican Football Federation said that Eriksson would be out of the team if was not able to win at home against Costa Rica, but since they did, he remained in the position. However, yesterday morning he had a meeting with the Mexican Federation of Football where he was announced that those, along with the Committee of Nationals Teams, had taken the decision of dismiss him as Mexico’s coach.
Nestor De la Torre, director of Federation, stated that they had to make a deep analysis on the results they had obtained during this time to take the final decision. ”This morning we had a meeting with Mr. Eriksson and although it is a shame for me and a lot of people, we told Mr. Eriksson that his spell with the national team was over,” Said De la Torre. He added that they have yet to decide who is going to be his replacement. “At the right moment we’ll announce the next step, but we ask the media to wait a little bit to know what is going to happen,” he said.
This is the last stage of the qualifying rounds for the World Cup that will be held next year in South Africa. Mexico dropped into the fourth place of the six-team group of the CONCACAF. If they finish in that position, they will have to play against the fifth team of South America for a last spot on the World Cup. The first three teams will qualify directly. On the other hand, Honduras looked very optimistic and very good offensively; the complete team gave everything that they had to win the game.
The star of the team yesterday was Carlos Costly who, with a great performance, scored two of the three goals that gave the victory to the Honduras squad. He is a very talented striker who fought for the ball and scored for the first time in the 17th minute, the second goal came in the 79th minute. He said that with the national team you have to give it all, and that’s what he did and in addition he gave the victory to his team.
