World welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao was admitted to a Manila hospital to treat a mild stomach ulcer. He also needed a chance to rest after campaigning for the May 10 congressional elections.
Jayke Joson, Pacquiao’s chief of staff, said Monday that doctors discovered the 31-year-old professional boxer had an ulcer during a routine checkup Sunday. Pacquiao’s family convinced him to stay in a suburban Manila hospital for a few days to get some much needed rest and care.
“Really, Manny can only rest if you confine him to a hospital,” Jayke Joson commented, adding Pacquiao was receiving intravenous dextrose drips. “It’s been so intense a campaign, he missed some of his meals.”
Pacquiao’s boxing promoters are working toward a possible bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr., or another fighter, as early as November. The boxing world has been on the edge of their betting seats waiting for a Pacquiao Mayweather matchup. Pacquiao’s mother, Dionisia, commented that her son was well and may be discharged from the hospital later Monday or Tuesday, this is a good sign for any future match up with Mayweather or another possible opponent.
Pacquiao won a seat in the Philippine’s powerful House of Representatives, which he will assume on June 30, 2010. In addition to preparing to enter the political arena, Pacquiao has yet to complete advertisements for products ranging from food to sports items, Joson said. So his near future will be very busy. Will he have time to schedule another major fight remains to be seen.
Promoter Bob Arum has said he’ll soon start talking to Mayweather’s camp about putting together the world’s top two welterweights for a Nov. 13 bout in Las Vegas or Texas. This has the boxing betting world very excited and the bets are rolling in already, without the fight even being officially scheduled.
Arum said he hoped to match Pacquiao against former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito if talks with Mayweather fall through.
Who are you betting on in this possible match up? With perhaps the greatest two fighters of this era matching up it will be an experience every boxing bettor will want to get in on the action for.
