In the 23-20 Monday night victory over the Denver Broncos, Sebastian Janikowski tied NFL record for the longest field goal in history with a 63-yard kick.
The second quarter was about to run out at the Sports Authority Field with the Oakland Raiders up by 10 points against host, the Denver Broncos, but Sebastian Janikowski was not planning on going to halftime like that, and with a tremendous 63 yard field goal astonished the 75,671 fans present. The NFL record imposed by Tom Dempsey in 1970, and tied by Jason Elam in 1998 had just been matched again by the Raiders’ left footed Polish placekicker.
It sure was a wonderful quarter for the placekicker, who accounted for 9 of his 10 points of the night in those 15 minutes, which were going to be crucial to kept up the winning streak that the Raiders began four seasons ago playing the Broncos on the road.
Although he hit a 70-yarder in pregame before, it is his 63-yard field goal which will go to the NFL books. About the record-tying experience Janikowski felt that he didn’t hit that ball very good, since “it barely got over the bar,” he said.
For the first time since 2000 the Broncos suffered a defeat in home opener, and a big part of it can be attributed to the 3 turnovers and 2 fumbles suffered, as well as the bad night from Kyle Orton. The starting quarterback threw for 24 of 26 for 304 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception.
It was that pass from Orton intercepted by Matt Giordano which ended in Janikowski’s 63-yard field goal. And in the fourth quarter a fumble from him began an offensive from Oakland that ended up in Jason Campbell’s TD, putting things 23-13 for the visitors.
After that fumble, the reaction from Orton didn’t take long to come, as he connected a nine yard pass with Lance Ball to put the score 23-20 with 3:43 to go, but the Raiders were going to make good use of the clock to defend the three point lead with which they won the game. The fans were so upset with their starting QB’s performance that at the end of the game didn’t hesitate to punish him by chanting for Tim Tebow.
This way the Broncos lost a game that they began winning in the first quarter 3-0 with Matt Prater’s field goal. In the second quarter the Raiders left things 16-3 with Campbell’s 3 yard pass to Marcel Reece, and three field goals from the man of the night: Janikowski.
Early in the second half Eric Decker turned a 90 yard punt return from Prater into a TD, and the Broncos kicker added three more points through a field goal, which left them down by 16-13 with the fourth quarter still to go. Unfortunately, they allowed one more TD from the Raiders -Campbell- which made Ball’s TD useless in the 23-20 kick off lost.
On Week 2 the Broncos will host the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon, while the Raiders will continue on the road, as they will visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday too.

NFL Picks News: Now that the NFL labor dispute comes to an end, the Green Bay Packers are still hoping to find a way to celebrate their victory in Super Bowl at the White House.
They work against a very short time.
Speaking to reporters on Monday in Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy said Washington would not be practical during the regular season, but the team is working with White House officials can plan for the month of August.
It ‘a challenge, because the bus is already packed in more preparation time in training camp after the block offseason workouts loss.
“We’ve since had some discussions, looking at whether we can find a date in August where the team could go down and visit the White House,” Murphy said. “I hope we can make it. I think it’d be such a special and unique opportunity for our players.”
Of course, President Barack Obama might have some problems of its own programming – especially with the countdown to the deadline for the debt of this approach.
“I do realize that President Obama has more important things to deal with now than this,” Murphy said.
The NFL did not allow the Packers to make the White House during the visit of a lockout.
If the trip can be saved in a way now, Murphy said he hopes to be particularly sweet for veteran cornerback Charles Woodson.
After the Packers beat the Chicago Bears for Obama in the championship game of the NFC, jokingly Woodson criticized Obama for not publicly supporting the Packers to the Super Bowl.
When Obama delivered a speech in Wisconsin, before the Packers’ victory over the Steelers Super Bowl Pittsburgh, Woodson sent him a signed shirt with the message: “See you at the White House. Go Packers.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing Charles Woodson and President Obama shake hands,” Murphy said.
